What is Kabylie?

Kabylia is a region located in the mountains of northern Africa, east of Algiers, Algeria. Once independent, it was annexed to French Algeria in 1857 and has been considered a region of Algeria ever since. Kabylia is sometimes seen as a cultural, historical, and ethnic region distinct from north-central Africa. It is currently divided into seven prefectures (wilayas): Bgayet (Béjaïa), Burǧ Bu Aɛririǧ (Bordj Bou Arreridj), Bumerdas (Boumerdès), Essedif (Sétif), Tubirets (Bouira), Tizi Wezzu (Tizi-Ouzou).

Kabylia has an area of 25,257 km2 and a population of approximately 5,682,520 inhabitants. The main language of Kabylia is Taqbaylit (Kabyle), but French and Algerian Arabic are also spoken in the region. The time zone of Kabylia is UTC +1.

Kabylia is geographically made up of three large regions: Ǧerǧer (the Djurdjura), Tababurt (the Kabylie of the Babors), and Tiwwura (The Iron Gates on the southern flank in the “Bibans” chain). The highest peak in Kabylia is Lalla Khedidja, which rises to 2,308 meters in the Adrar n Ǧerǧer. The highest point of Tababurt, the Adrar ntbaburt (Great Mount Babor), reaches 2004 meters on the eastern slope of Kabylia.
